I had not seen him since before the channel started. No warning, no phone call — he came through the door and I forgot the camera was running. That is the reason I keep filming these: you cannot script the second someone realises who is standing in front of them.

Every year there is a version of this day that gets filmed for an audience somewhere else, and a version we live at home. I wanted the second one — the street, the noise, the flag over somebody's shoulder, nobody performing for anyone.
Why I keep making these in Somali
People ask why I do not subtitle everything and chase a wider audience. The honest answer is that the jokes do not survive the trip. A story told in the language it happened in lands differently, and the people it was made for can tell when you are talking past them.
